ARTHUR ROBINS, BIG CUE, PROVENANCE: GALLERY DIAMANTE, BLATT BILLIARDS, NEW WORLD ART CENTER

BIG CUE, 1997

With Coney Island in the background, the game of pool takes on new meaning. Where as Coney Island is a microcosm of life, so the game of pool reflects the prisms of existence. Life is like a Roller Coaster, and you get lost in the 'Fun House'. You laugh at the monsters in the Spook House as they scare you to bits, and you eat Carney food though you know it's tasty poison. "Step right up and chalk your cue" goes the Freak Show barker in your head. "Sink the balls and win a prize" squirts the hustler over your shoulder. "Clickety click" go the smooth round bumping cars over the green felt. But just like life, and just like Coney Island, pool is not just a game. It's a tightrope without a net, a boardwalk with missing planks, a swim in the ocean with sharks. So walk softly and carry a big cue.
